Breast reconstruction can be performed immediately after a mastectomy or at a later date, depending on a patient’s health and desires. Proffer Surgical Associates suggest breast reconstruction be done in one of two ways: through the use of skin and fat from the abdomen, or through artificial breast implants.

In the first method, known as the DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) flap, skin and fat from the abdomen are transplanted to create a new breast that looks and feels like a natural breast. The new breast will age at a natural rate because it is composed of native tissue. Because of the nature of this procedure, the patient also receives the added benefit of a tummy tuck. With the breast implant method, Dr. Proffer teams up with the oncologists at Harrington Breast Center to reconstruct breast immediately following mastectomy surgery.
